PATIENCE. PERSISTENCE. PROCESS. THEY’RE THE THREE ‘P’S THAT MAKE JONATHAN’S APPROACH TO BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT NOT JUST UNIQUE, BUT ENJOYABLE.
There are few people you’ll speak to who love their work like Jonathan Prutzman loves business development and marketing. In fact, when he’s not at work, you’ll likely find Jonathan working -- and if that’s not the case, he’s probably still thinking about it.
As Director of Business Development at Innovative Solutions, Jonathan is charged with prospecting and bringing in new accounts that fit Innovative’s people-first philosophy. When he’s not out in the field, on the phone, or answering emails, he’s mentoring his team as they maintain existing accounts -- team members that are where Jonathan once was.
Prior to joining Innovative as an Account Executive in 2011, Jonathan was the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for IC2S, a network infrastructure company he spent 11 years with. Originally hired as a Public Relations Specialist, Jonathan kickstarted the company’s main marketing channels, including building its first website, writing its first newsletter, and eventually creating his own role in business development.
Though business development quickly became Jonathan’s passion, it wasn’t yet a thought when he started as a freshman in accounting at St. John Fisher College. A quick change of heart and a handful of math classes later, Jonathan began studying computer science. To round out his experience, he switched his major once more, junior year, to communications and journalism.
Armed with a Bachelor’s in communications and journalism as well as a Bachelor’s in computer science, Jonathan used an internship with Via Health senior year as his entry into full-time public relations work upon graduation in 2000. It was in this first full-time gig that Jonathan was encouraged by his boss -- a mentor he names as one of his greatest role models now -- to move from public relations into sales.
Despite his focus on business development today, Jonathan’s degree in computer science has played an instrumental role throughout his career, from early days of building websites to later boosting his ability to understand and craft infrastructure and network solutions for customers.
Jonathan credits his love of business development and entrepreneurial spirit to his role in promoting the baseball card shop his family owned as he grew up. He lends that entrepreneurial spirit to the local Young Entrepreneurs Academy, mentoring one individual or team each of the last three years as they build business and marketing plans to start their own entrepreneurial adventures.
A native of Palmyra, Jonathan now lives in Walworth with his wife, Kerry, and two kids, Meah and Cameron, who he can often be found attending basketball and tee-ball practices and dance and piano lessons with. A lifelong basketball player, he continues to play in a league on Thursday nights, swapping that out for golf during the warmer months. Jonathan also sits on the boards of Hickock Center for Brain Injury and St. John Fisher’s New Media + Communications.
While Jonathan takes great pride in his work and values his role as a leader at Innovative, he finds himself happiest when he can turn off and enjoy the moment, whether it’s lifting weights and shooting hoops alone, hiking, biking, and canoeing with his family, or deep sea fishing in the Florida Keys.
When it comes to both business and personal matters, Jonathan’s focus is always on doing the right thing. So far, his trust in patience, persistence, and process hasn’t let him down.
